Week 5 - The flu

Hello! This is the fifth weekly post for Fish RPG.

I woke up Monday morning this week feeling unusually fatigued. That fatigue quickly grew to nausea, coughing, and a severe sore throat. To my relief, I eventually learned that I was sick with the flu, not covid, but the symptoms still hit me very hard. As a result, I made the intentional decision to pause most of my game development efforts for the week, instead choosing to relax (both physically and mentally) in order to recover. I'm happy I made that choice, and at time of writing, I'm almost back to normal.

Despite suffering through the flu, I did make some progress on Fish RPG. Most notably, I improved the game's lighting (shown in the cover image for this post). My current plan is to use both point lights and moonlight visible through windows in certain rooms, but moonlight is high on the chopping block as I continue to push towards alpha.

On that topic, my original milestones marked the vertical slice (i.e. alpha) as being finished by today. Given that I spent last week sick, I'm comfortable pushing that deadline to include this coming week as well. Of course taking an extra week here means one week fewer for additional content and testing, but I think that's a fair tradeoff in this case. As a happy coincidence, Awesome Games Done Quick starts later today and I had already planned to take a week off work to enjoy it, so I should have more time than usual to spend on game development.
